Gonzalez paces Bucs in day one of Southern Intercollegiate Championships

Play resumes at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday

ATHENS, Ga. (September 8, 2017) – The men’s tennis team concluded day one of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships. Six Bucs played in singles matches, while three duos competed in doubles matches.

Sergi Fontcuberta (Barcelona Spain) and Robert Herrera (Barcelona, Spain) competed in the Division I singles. Fontcuberta received a bye in the first round, but fell to Ignacio Garcia from FAU, with a score of 7-6, 6-4.  Fontcuberta will play Josh Howard-Trip from Arkansas tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. for the singles consolation matches. After Robert Herrera also received a bye in the first round, he played Jan Zielinksi from UGA and fell 6-1, 6-2. Herrera will play at 12:30 in the consolation matches against Anthony Schohn from FAU.

David Gonzalez (Barcelona, Spain) picked right back up where he left off in the spring. Gonzalez received a bye in the first round, but took on Sam Dromsky from UGA and won 6-3, 6-4 making it to the round of 16, which will begin tomorrow. Gonzalez is competing in the alpha seeds and is one of eight players to earn this seed in the Division II singles.

Juan Lugo (Maracay, Venezuela) was one of the few Bucs who did not earn a bye for the first round. Lugo took on Philippe Corteau of Lander and easily won the match 6-1 both times. Lugo then took on Nicolas Rouanet, but dropped both sets 6-3, 6-2. Lugo will play in the Division II consolation matches tomorrow at 4:00 p.m., where he will face Arthur Stefani from FAU.

Chris Mikrovas (Athens, Greece) and Taisei Miyamoto (Chiba, Japan) played in the Division III singles. Mikrovas fell to Abraham Asaba from Virgina Tech. Miyamoto earned a bye and then took on Ryan Kros from Virginia Tech. After pushing a third set, Miyamoto lost 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. Both Mikrovas and Miyamoto will play in the Division III singles consolation matches tomorrow. Mikrovas is scheduled to play at 12:30 p.m. and Miyamoto at 1:30 p.m. Mikrovas will take on former Buccaneer Wenceslao Albin.

The Bucs advanced two during doubles play. The duo of Robert Herrera and Sergi Fontcuberta took on Magalnaes and Caldwell from Radford and battled through an 8-7 (5) win. They will take on Loeb and Zeilinksi from UGA at 9:00 a.m. in the Division I Doubles.

Lastly in the Division III Doubles, David Gonzalez and Taisei Miyamoto combined, but fell to Kras and Bernstine from Virgina Tech.

In the Division II Doubles, Juan Lugo and Chris Mikrovas earned a bye in the first round, so they will take on Bergevi/Decoste from Stetson, which is also scheduled for 9:00 a.m.

Play will resume at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 9 in Athens, Ga.
