Play resumes at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday for ETSU beginning with doubles

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (October 20, 2017) – The ETSU men’s tennis team finished their second day of the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships in Knoxville, Tenn. The Bucs will continue to play in both doubles and singles play on Saturday.

In doubles play, Robert Herrera (Barcelona, Spain) and Sergi Fontcuberta (Barcelona, Spain) dropped a tight 8-7 match to Tennessee. Frazier Rengifo and Juan Lugo (Maracay, Venezuela) picked up an 8-2 win over Indiana to advance. They will play on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. against Louisville’s duo.

It was another successful day for Herrera in singles draws as he made it to the semi-final round of his draws. He won 6-2, 7-5 against Brett Winters from Xavier and then went on to beat Gonzalo Morell from MTSU, 6-3, 6-3. Up next for Herrera is Kentucky’s Ryotaro Matsumura at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.

Rengifo won his first match of the day against Dayton’s Theo Jenner 6-2, 6-4. He then took on Scott Jones from Tennessee, but fell 6-4, 6-2. Sergi Fonctuberta put up a fight against Mason Dragos from Butler. Fontcuberta was defeated 6-4, 5-7, 7-5. Juan Lugo also battled in a three-set match, but fell to Kentucky’s Enzo Wallart, 1-6, 7-5, 6-0.

Miguel Este (Caracas, Venezuela), David Gonzalez (Barcelona, Spain), and Tasei Miyamoto (Chiba, Japan) also competed in singles draws today, but they were also defeated by their opponents. Este fell to Daniel Valent from Vandervilt, 6-4, 6-4 as Gonzalez fell 6-2, 7-5 to Indiana’s Keivon Tabrizi. Miyamoto took on Timo Stodder from Tennessee and lost 6-3, 6-2.

Play resumes on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. for the Bucs as they continue to play in the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships. There will be two rounds of main draw doubles and one round of singles.
