RICHMOND, Va. (Feb. 10, 2018) – In an intense battle at the Virginia Commonwealth University, the ETSU Buccaneers came up short, as VCU slid past ETSU 4-3. The Bucs fall to 2-4, as VCU stays a perfect 6-0.
The Rams grabbed the doubles point with back-to-back wins from their No. 1 and 2 doubles, as the third match was unfinished.
Robert Herrera (Barcelona, Spain) tied the match with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Vitor Lima. Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia) then gave ETSU a lead after he defeated Philip Mobius 7-5, 6-1. VCU tied the match again after Arvid Noren won 6-4, 6-2 against Sergi Fontcuberta (Barcelona, Spain). Juan Lugo took the first set from Javier Amantegui, but ultimately fell 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, as VCU would take a lead. David Gonzalez (Barcelona, Spain) fought in a three-set match to defeat Ignacio Rivero Crespo 6-0, 3-6, 6-4. With the match all tied up, it would be an intense battle between Miguel Este (Caracas, Venezuela) and Inigo Torre Martin. Martin won the first set 6-0, but Este won the second set 3-6 to push a third. Este put up a fight, but fell 6-4 in the final set, as VCU would pull away with the win.
The Bucs will get back on the court tomorrow (Feb. 10) when they take on William & Mary at 10:00 a.m.
