RICHMOND, Va. (Feb. 11, 2018) – The ETSU men’s tennis team handed William & Mary their first loss 4-1 on Sunday afternoon, at the Thalhimer Tennis Center. The Bucs improve to 3-4 and close out the weekend with a 1-1 record.
Robert Herrera (Barcelona, Spain) and Sergi Fontcuberta (Barcelona, Spain) got things started for the Bucs with a 6-4 win in doubles action. Juan Lugo (Maracay, Venezuela) and Tasei Miyamoto (Chiba, Japan) secured the doubles point for ETSU after downing the Tribe 6-3.
Freshman Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia) and senior Robert Herrera continued their momentum from yesterday’s match to earn back-to-back points, to give the Bucs a hot 3-0 start. Rengifo defeated Louis Newman 7-6, 6-2 at the No. 4 spot, while Herrera came from behind to win a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 match to help his team. William & Mary’s Alec Miller was able to grab the Tribe a point with a 7-6, 7-6 win over Juan Lugo (Maracay, Venezuela) at the No. 2 spot. Sergi Fontcuberta came through for the Bucs after defeating Lars de Boer. Fontcuberta also fell behind in the first set, but fought back to take a 6-7, 6-3, 7-6 win.
ETSU returns to Johnson City to host their first home match of the season. They will welcome Tennessee Tech on Sunday, Feb. 18. First serve is set for 11:00 a.m.
