BRISTOL, Tenn. (Feb. 18, 2018) – The ETSU men’s tennis team picked up a 6-1 win against Tennessee Tech, in their home opener at the Bristol Racquet Club on Sunday morning. This is now the Bucs’ second straight win, as they improve to 4-4 on the season.
In doubles competition, Tennessee Tech’s Eduardo Mena and Gonzalo Garcia defeated Miguel Este (Caracas, Venezuela) and Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia) 6-3, but ETSU won back-to-back matches to clinch the overall doubles point. Juan Lugo and Tasei Miyamoto (Chiba, Japan) combined in the No. 1 spot and won 6-2, followed by a 6-4 win from Robert Herrera and Sergi Fontcuberta (Barcelona, Spain) in the No. 2 spot.
Frazier Rengifo jumped out on top in singles play, defeating Marc Mila 6-1, 6-2. Juan Lugo (Maracay, Venezuela) played against a familiar foe, taking on Wenceslao Albin. Albin defeated Lugo 7-5, 6-2 to give the Eagles their only point of the day. From there, the Bucs won four consecutive wins. Robert Herrera won a three-set battle against Eduardo Mena in the No. 1 spot. He won 3-6, 7-6, 6-3. At the No. 2 spot, Sergi Fontcuberta clinched the match for the Bucs with a 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 win against Jorge Alfonzo. ETSU won two more points with wins coming from David Gonzalez (Barcelona, Spain) at the No. 5 spot and Tasei Miyamoto in the No. 6 spot.
The Bucs return to action next Saturday, Feb. 24 when they host UNCG for their first conference match of the season. First serve is set for 9:30 a.m. at the Bristol Racquet Club.
