BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (March 2, 2018) – The ETSU men’s tennis team took on the Samford Bulldogs in their second conference match of the season, on Friday afternoon in Birmingham, Ala. ETSU picked up their second conference victory to improve 6-4 and 2-0 in the SoCon, while handing Samford their first conference loss of the season.
Robert Herrera (Barcelona, Spain) and Sergi Fontcuberta (Barcelona, Spain) gave the Bucs a win to kick off doubles action. They took down Russouw Norval and Alekdandar Petrovic 6-1 to continue to stay undefeated. ETSU clinched the doubles point when Miguel Este (Caracas, Venezuela) and Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia) defeated Max Rebol and Justin Ghavami 6-2.
Senior leader Herrera kept things going for the Bucs with a 6-4, 6-1 win. Tasei Miyamoto (Chiba, Japan) followed in Herrera’s footsteps after he defeated Max Rebol 6-3, 6-4 to give the Bucs a 3-0 advantage. Sergi Fontcuberta then clinched the match for ETSU with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Eduardo Lourido. Fontcuberta improves to 7-2 in singles. Buccaneer wins also came from David Gonzalez (Barcelona, Spain) and Frazier Rengifo. Gonzalez defeated Aleksandar Petrovic 6-3, 7-6 and Rengifo won a three- set match of 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 against Roussouw Norval. Samford’s Justin Ghavami took their only match of the day with a 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 win over Juan Lugo.
“Another great conference win on the road,” said head coach Martin Stiegwardt. “I’m so happy for Sergi. He not only beat a guy he lost to pretty badly in the fall, but he also clinched the match for the fourth consecutive time. That’s pretty impressive. Everyone is getting better and we hope to keep improving.”
The Bucs will continue to play on the road. They will take on Georgia State this Sunday, March 4 at 11:00 a.m.
