JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 10, 2019) – The ETSU Buccaneers held their fifth consecutive opponent to zero points as the men’s tennis team upended Southern Miss on Sunday afternoon by the final score of 4-0. With the win, ETSU improved to 9-3, having won its sixth consecutive match.
The Barcelona duo of Sergi Fontcuberta (Barcelona, Spain) and David Gonzalez (Barcelona, Spain) kicked things off with a 6-1 doubles victory over Panji Setiawan and Mieszko Kwasniewski in the number three doubles hole for their sixth consecutive doubles triumph. Shortly following the win at the three spot, Yusuf Khamis (Cairo, Egypt) and Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia) clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Chung-Han Tsai and Matthieu Peres in the number two doubles position.
Miguel Este (Caracas, Venezuela) doubled the ETSU lead from the No. 6 singles position with a straight-set (6-1, 6-2) defeat over Kwasniewski to jump start singles action. The Bucs pulled one point closer to the victory as Rengifo bested Jorman Reyes in the No. 2 singles slot in three sets. After dropping the first set 6-3, Rengifo settled in to cruise to a 6-1 second and third set for his 10th singles victory of the season. The match was finalized in the No. 1 singles hole after Fontcuberta upended Ronit Bisht in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4 to solidify the Bucs’ sixth consecutive win.
ETSU will return to the courts on Friday, March 15 when the Bucs travel to Murfreesboro, Tenn. for a 6 p.m. showdown with Middle Tennessee State University. Two days later, March 17, the Bucs will host Elon at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex at 1 p.m.
