Bucs conclude Louisville Invitational with 11 singles wins

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Oct. 13, 2019) – The ETSU Buccaneers Men’s Tennis team capped off the 2019 Louisville Invitational with a singles championship from Dimitri Badra (Maracay, Venezuela). The Bucs concluded the event with 11 singles wins and three doubles victories, with four of the singles wins coming from Badra as he claimed the C Singles Draw Championship.

Badra began his run with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Butler’s Alvaro Huete before edging out Temple’s Eric Biscoveanu in a three-set thriller, 4-6, 6-4, 10-4. The Venezuela native then capped off Saturday’s performance with a straight-set triumph over Toledo’s Danilo Vukotic, 6-4, 6-4. The redshirt-sophomore then laid claim to his singles championship with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Paran Pun of Wright State, improving to 4-0 in singles play for the tournament.

Yusuf Khamis (Cairo, Egypt) and Juan Lugo (Maracay, Venezuela) finished second on the team in singles wins with a 2-1 record apiece. Khamis picked up wins over Colorado State’s Jesus Perez Plaza (6-2, 6-3) and Kennesaw State’s Bryan Triana (6-4, 6-4). Khamis was then bounced from the A Singles Draw following a narrow three-set loss to Pavel Motl of Middle Tennessee State (2-6, 6-4, 5-10). Lugo face an identical situation in the B Singles Draw, earning wins against Ball State’s Danilo Kovacevic (6-3, 4-6, 10-4) and Louisville’s David Mizrahi (6-4, 6-2) before falling to Kentucky’s Kevin Humpfner (6-4, 6-3).

Dylan Bednarczyk (Ontario, Canada), Miguel Este (Caracas, Venezuela) and Chris Mikrovas (Athens, Greece) each picked up one singles win over the course of the tournament. Bednarczyk, making his ETSU debut, defeated Gonzalo Garcia Nieto of Lipscomb in the consolation draw with a 1-6, 6-2, 10-5 victory. Este earned his win against Louisville’s Clement Filho (6-4, 6-4), while Mikrovas claimed an 8-1 triumph over Filip Zupancic of Toledo.

Khamis and Lugo led the Bucs in doubles wins with two, picking up a 6-1 victory over Brett Winters and Matthew Graft (Xavier) as well as a 6-4 triumph over Biscoveanu and Juan Araoz of Temple. The duo fell in the B Doubles Draw Championship, dropping a 6-3 decision to Humpfner and Alex Leblanc of Kentucky.

Badra and Este claimed the only other doubles victory for the Blue & Gold, besting Huete and Filip Tensing of Butler by the final of 6-2.
