NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Oct. 26, 2019) – The ETSU Buccaneers men’s tennis team saw two players reach their respective quarterfinals rounds as Juan Lugo (Maracay, Venezuela) and Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia) finished 2-0 on the day to advance in the main draw and consolation bracket. Rengifo finished 2-0 to advance to the quarterfinals of the main draw, while Lugo won two sets to advance to the consolation draw quarterfinals.
Rengifo earned a hard-fought victory over Tennessee’s Finn Stodder to advance out of the Round of 32 in the main singles draw. Rengifo held off Stodder in the first set, 7-5, before cruising to a 6-2 win in the second set. The junior standout then competed in a three-set match against Christopher Edge of Middle Tennessee State. Rengifo dropped the first set 6-1 before rallying to win the second set, 7-6(4), to force the dramatic third set. The Colombia native was able to stave elimination after pulling away for the 6-4 win over Edge in the final set, setting up a date in the quarterfinals on Sunday.
Lugo began his day with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Vince Orlando of Ball State in the Round of 32 consolation bracket, advancing into the Round of 16. The Venezuelan native then handed Vanderbilt’s Adam Sraberg a straight-set loss on his own court. Lugo bested the California native, 6-4, 6-4 to advance into the consolation quarterfinals on Sunday.
Miguel Este (Caracas, Venezuela) earned split results on Saturday afternoon, beginning his day with a victory over Mateo Julio of Purdue, handidly winning 6-2, 6-3. The ETSU senior then fell to James Story of Memphis, 6-2, 6-2 in the Round of 16, ending Este’s participation in the ITA Ohio Valley Regional.
The final singles event of the day for the Bucs was Dimitri Badra (Maracay, Venezuela) with the sophomore going toe-to-toe with No. 116-ranked Kento Yamada of Kentucky. Badra claimed the first set 6-2, before falling 6-2 to set up a third frame. The Venezuela native fell short of an appearance in the Round of 16, falling 6-4 in the final set of play.
Lugo and Rengifo will be back in action tomorrow in the main draw quarterfinals and the consolation quarterfinals as the only two Buccaneers left standing in the event.
