EVERYTHING ABOUT ETSU
ETSU is coming off its ninth Southern Conference Championship in program history and the quest for a third consecutive crown begins in Florida this weekend. The Bucs also laid claim to the program’s 15th regular season SoCon title in 2019.
The Bucs return a strong core in Miguel Este (Caracas, Venezuela), Yusuf Khamis (Cairo, Egypt), Juan Lugo (Maracay, Venezuela) and Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia). The four competitors alone finished with a combined singles record of 69-15, led by 19 wins from Este.
ETSU welcomes several new faces, including Dimitri Badra (Maracay, Venezuela) who redshirted last season. Badra emerged on the scene in the fall, finishing 12-3 in singles play and 5-4 in doubles action, while winning a singles flight championship at the Louisville Invitational.
HOO ARE THE OWLS?
Florida Atlantic is already three matches into its spring season, holding a 1-2 overall record. The Owls started off the campaign with a 4-0 win over Florida A&M, followed by back-to-back 7-0 losses to Florida State and No. 1 Florida. Thus far through three matches, FAU holds a record of 2-12 in singles play and 3-4 in doubles action.
The Owls finished 19-10 last season, falling in the Conference USA Championship to Middle Tennessee State by the final score of 4-3. FAU returns Alvaro Fernandez Horta who finished 17-5 in singles play last season, as well as Jason Legall who turned in a 14-10 record.
RUNNING WITH THE BULLS
South Florida has one match under its belt, cruising to a 7-0 win over Florida Gulf Coast on Jan. 11. The Bulls next showdown will be on Saturday against the Blue & Gold.
The 2019 season saw the Bulls finish with a 10-16 overall record, including 4-4 in league play. USF returns just two players from last season’s squad that competed in singles play, Pierre Luquet and Jakub Wojcik. The duo each posted an 11-11 record in singles action, primarily playing in the No. 4 and No. 5 slots.
