Four track and field members awarded for academic success through career seasons
MACON, Ga. (March 2, 2012) – The Atlantic Sun Conference unveiled its first-ever men’s and women’s indoor track and field Academic All-Conference Teams on Thursday, with ETSU junior thrower Jasmine Foster (Johnson City, Tenn.) and sophomore jumper Lexie Burley (Johnson City, Tenn.) landing on the women’s team, and senior throwers Justin Burton (Bastian, Va.) and Cornell Sneed (Miami, Fla.) earning spots on the men’s team.
The A-Sun’s Academic All-Conference Teams are comprised of student-athletes who embody the conference’s mission of Building Winners for Life. Each member of the team carries a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.30 and has competed in at least half of its team’s contests.
Foster boasts a 3.598 GPA in Physical Education, and has competed in all five of ETSU’s meets during the indoor season. In those meets, the Science Hill product earned a combined seven top 10’s and five top fives in the weight throw and shot put. Foster’s best finishes were a third place weight throw at the Appalachian Collegiate Indoor (Dec. 2-3) and a third place shot put with a personal best 13.22m launch at the A-Sun Indoor Championships (Feb. 17-18). She also set her personal best in the weight throw with a 16.20m mark at the Niswonger Invitational (Jan. 27-28).
Burley, another former Science Hill track and field star, carries a 3.88 GPA in Exercise Science and also competed in all five of the Buccaneers’ indoor meets. The Johnson City native set her personal best in the long jump (5.55m) at the Penn State Sykes and Sabock Challenge Cup (Feb. 4) and also set a new personal mark in the triple jump (12.22m) at the Virginia Tech Invitational (Jan. 13-14). Burley combined for eight top 10’s and four top fives in the two events, including winning the triple jump at the A-Sun Indoor Championships, and is ranked No. 1 in the A-Sun in the triple jump.
Burton competed in four events for ETSU and holds a 3.32 GPA in Sport Management. In his senior indoor season, Burton earned three top fives and set new personal bests in both the weight throw and shot put. The Bastian, Va. native set both of his career marks inside the ETSU/MSHA Athletic Center with a 15.23m shot put at the Niswonger Invitational and a 15.20m weight throw at the A-Sun Indoor Championships. Both performances earned Burton fourth in the events.
Sneed competed in all five events, setting personal bests in each of the throws while also hauling a 3.752 GPA as a Criminal Justice major. The 6-foot senior went through the indoor season earning six top 10’s and two top fives, saving his best performances for the A-Sun meet. At the indoor championships, Sneed earned a spot on the podium with a personal best 15.75m weight throw to take third place, and set his personal best in the shot put as well with a 15.05m toss to take fourth in the event.
