MACON, Ga. (March 6, 2013) – Sophomore Filip Jalovy (Modrice, Czech Republic) and junior Tyler Stepp (Dandridge, Tenn.) of the ETSU men’s track & field team were named Atlantic Sun Track & Field Athletes of the Week, as released by the conference on Wednesday.
Jalovy and Stepp each competed for the Buccaneers over the weekend at the Virginia Tech Final Qualifier inside Rector Field House. The ETSU tandem looked to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships and, while they did not accomplish that goal, each stood out in the final week of the indoor season.
Jalovy looked to qualify in the 800m – the silver medalist at the A-Sun Indoor Championships – and posted a time of 1:54.17 to earn second place at the meet. The time did not qualify Jalovy, but his season-best mark of 1:52.99 ranks Jalovy No. 4 in the conference to end his sophomore indoor season.
After taking gold at the A-Sun Indoors in the long jump a couple weeks ago, Stepp looked to improve and reach the qualifying mark in the event. The junior had a big personal best leap of 7.61m, coming up just inches short of the distance needed to qualify of 7.68m. Stepp’s season-best heading into the meet was 7.51m, which he posted to earn first at the A-Sun Indoors.
The A-Sun Track Athlete of the Week honors gives Jalovy three for the indoor season, while Stepp’s Field Athlete of the Week award is his first.
The Buccaneers begin the outdoor season next Thursday, March 14, at the 49er Classic in Charlotte, N.C.
