Buccaneers total a number of collegiate bests in competition on Friday in Knoxville
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (April 11, 2014) – The ETSU track & field program put together a solid showing on its first day of action at the Tennessee Relays with nine top-10 finishes on Friday at Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium.
Junior Dede Edgecombe (Spartanburg, S.C.) continued her strong stretch in the women’s 100 meter hurdles with a wind-aided 13.53 time to finish second in the event. This time matches the sprinter’s record time that she set last weekend at the Florida Relays, but will not stand as record-tying due to illegal wind. Edgecombe also turned in a 10th-place finish in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.99, just behind teammate Nicole Alexander (Rock Hill, S.C.) in ninth with a 1:05.13 time.
In the field for the women, senior Lexie Burley (Johnson City, Tenn.) earned a sixth-place standing in the triple jump with a collegiate-best leap of 12.31 meters, while Katerina Vodova (Humpolec, Czech Republic) rounded out the top-10 in the pole vault with an also collegiate-high launch of 3.80 meters.
On the men’s side, the Bucs experienced some successes in distance events. In the 800 meter run, Filip Jalovy (Modrice, Czech Republic) placed seventh overall with a collegiate-best time of 1:53.54, while Ryan Jones (Apopka, Fla.) trailed closely in 11th-place with a 1:53.68 time. Furthermore, Simeon Roberts (Greeneville, Tenn.) placed in the top-five in the 1500 meter run with a fourth-place time of 3:50.88, while Angus Baldwin (Tumbi Umbi, Australia) raced to an eighth-place finish with a collegiate-high time of 3:54.71 in the event as well.
The final day of competition at the Relays will begin on Saturday with the women’s invite discus throw at 11 a.m., while running events will begin at noon with the men’s and women’s 3K steeplechase. Action will continue throughout the day and into the night as men’s and women’s 4x400 meter relay events will conclude competition in Knoxville at around 6:30 p.m.
