Two Track and Field Alumni Compete at North Down International Games

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Aug. 8, 2003) - Former East Tennessee State University student-athletes Catherine Berry and Taniesha Scanlon (formerly Taniesha Robinson) competed at the North Down International Games held in Bangor, Ireland on Friday, Aug. 1. Berry took second place in the 3000 meters with a time of 9:14.80, behind Olympic silver medalist Sonia O'Sullivan. Scanlon won the triple jump with a mark of 12.79 meters. Berry, a native of Surrey, England, ran for ETSU's cross country and track and field teams from 1997-2000. During her career, Berry earned All-American honors in the 5000 meters and made six trips to NCAA meets three for cross country and three for track and field. Berry holds the Buccaneer record in the outdoor 3000 meters with a time of 9:29.91 set in 1999. Scanlon, a native of Mandeville, Jamaica, was a member of the ETSU track and field team from 1995-99. During her collegiate career Robinson became the first female to capture first-place finishes in all three jumping events at the SoCon Outdoor Championships in 1998. Scanlon holds ETSU records for the indoor long jump (19'6") and triple jump (41'6 ) as well as outdoor (20'3 and 45'5 respectively). Both Berry and Scanlon were members of the Buccaneer indoor record holding distance medley relay squad with a mark of 11:58.99 set in the 1998 indoor season.
