Bucs sweep A-Sun Athlete of the Week honors behind Monal's speed on the track

MACON, Ga. (May 13, 2009) - ETSU sprinter Duronal Monal (Belle Glade, Fla.) highlighted the Buccaneers on the track last Tuesday night, as the junior sprinter cruised his way to a pair of regional qualifying marks at the Smoky Mountain Twilight Meet, located on the Tom Black Track inside LaPorte Stadium to earn his first career Athlete of the Week award, the conference announced Wednesday.

Monal flew his way to regional qualifying marks in both the 100 and 200-meter events on Tuesday. The junior sprinter finished second in the 100m with a time of 10.46 - and after finishing behind Tennessee's Joseph Morris in the 100m - Monal beat him out by turning in his second regional qualifying time in the 200m. The Belle Glade, Fla., native won the event by clocking in with a blazing time of 21.18. Monal sits atop the conference performance list in both events, and is the reigning 100m A-Sun Champion.

ETSU looks for a trifecta at the Outdoor Atlantic Sun Championships this weekend in Jacksonville, already claiming titles in cross country and indoor track & field. No team has ever won all three championships in the same academic year.

The Atlantic Sun Conference is an 11-member league committed to Building Winners for Life. The A-Sun stands for achievement with integrity in both the academic and athletic arenas, with a focus on the balance between the two for our student-athletes. Headquartered in Macon, Ga., the A-Sun boasts six of the top eight media markets in the Southeast. The A-Sun includes a blend of the most prestigious and dynamic private and public institutions in the region: Belmont University, Campbell University, East Tennessee State University, Florida Gulf Coast University, Jacksonville University, Kennesaw State University, Lipscomb University, Mercer University, University of North Florida, University of South Carolina Upstate and Stetson University.
