Staggering performances underline ETSU’s weekend in Blacksburg
BLACKSBURG, Va. (Jan. 14, 2012) – The ETSU track and field team struggled through its first meet of 2012, but managed a combined four top-five and 12 top-10 performances through Friday and Saturday at the Virginia Tech Invitational.
"This was a tough weekend for us, although we did have a few highlights,” said ETSU assistant coach Eli Sunquist. “For the most part, it was a disappointing showing by both teams. Going up against some of these programs really exposed our inexperience and lack of focus. It will be a tough next few weeks of training, and hopefully things will turn around quickly for our student-athletes."
ETSU’s highlights included six different personal bests, along with freshman Demetria Edgecombe (Spartanburg, S.C.) setting the school record in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.94. Sophomore Lexie Burley (Johnson City, Tenn.) soared past her personal best in the triple jump (11.90m), setting her new mark at 12.22m and earning sixth-place in the event. Junior Melissa Peters (Mesa, Ariz.) also set a new personal indoor mark, taking sixth-place in the 800m with a time of 2:20.73.
On the men’s side, Ifrish Alberg (Paramaribo, Suriname),freshman Mikey Lee (Lenior City, Tenn.), junior Tim O’Dell (Palm Coast, Fla.) and freshman Jadon Short (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) all set personal bests, with Short’s 7.40m long jump earning third in the event and qualifying the freshman for the USTFA Junior National Championships. Alberg took sixth in the 60m dash with a time of 6.81, Lee took third in the unseeded pole vault at 4.30m and O’Dell’s new indoor mark placed fourth in the 400m at 48.90.
Six other Buccaneers put up top-10 marks, including sophomore Taylor Story (Germantown, Tenn.), senior Hannah Bowers (Jonesborough, Tenn.) and junior Jasmine Foster (Johnson City, Tenn.) on the women’s side, as well as senior Cornell Sneed (Miami, Fla.), freshman Filip Jalovy (Modrice, Czech Republic) and junior Ryan Jones (Apopka, Fla.) in the men’s events. Story leapt 1.65m in the high jump to claim third place, while Bowers’ and Foster’s top-10’s came in the 400m and shot put, respectively. Jalovy earned two top-10’s, placing fifth in the men’s 1000m (2:31.74) and ninth in the 800m (1:57.40). Jones finished just behind Jalovy in the 800m (1:57.46), while Sneed earned tenth in the shot put with a 14.18m hurl.
The Buccaneer track and field program resumes competition next weekend, when the combined event student-athletes compete at the Christopher Newport University Captains Invitational and Multis in Newport News, Va.
