ETSU earns two more Field Athlete of the Week awards, brings total to five for the year

MACON, Ga. (Jan. 25, 2012) – With impressive performances this past weekend at the CNU Captains Invitational and Multis, freshmen K’vonte Scott (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Katerina Vodova (Humpolec, Czech Republic) were each named Atlantic Sun Field Athlete of the Week.

The award is the first for both, as ETSU has now taken home the A-Sun’s Field Athlete of the Week two-consecutive weeks on the men’s side and all three weeks on the women’s side.

"I'm happy for these two freshmen to be recognized for their achievements this past weekend,” ETSU assistant coach Eli Sunquist said. “Both are extremely hard workers and have just started to get into competition form. K'Vonte [Scott] handled his first heptathlon pretty well, and will only get better from here on out. Katka [Vodova] is still getting back into competition shape, and should have a great indoor and outdoor season for us."

Scott put in a record-breaking effort in the heptathlon, scoring 4,834 points in the event to break former Buccaneer Nic Chernikow’s previous ETSU mark of 4,820, and earn second overall in the event. In doing so, Scott set personal bests in the 60m (7.29), 1000m (2:56.69), pole vault (4.10m), long jump (6.55m) and shot put (10.38m). The Virginia Beach native also took first in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.77.

With his new heptathlon mark, the Buccaneer freshman ranks No. 1 in the A-Sun, No. 32 in Division I and No. 4 among Division I freshmen.

Vodova earned three top-10s, finishing eighth or better in the long jump, shot put and 600m. Vodova set an indoor personal best in the long jump with a mark of 5.58m to win the event. In the shot put, Vodova earned sixth with an 11.24m toss, and took seventh in the 600m with a time of 1:43.31. She now ranks No. 2 in the A-Sun in the long jump and No. 8 in the shot put.

ETSU will look to add to its weekly award total this Friday and Saturday, when it hosts the 34th annual Niswonger Invitational inside the ETSU/MSHA Athletic Center.
