Track and Field heads for Penn State’s Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (Feb. 3, 2012) – Two weeks before hosting the 2012 Atlantic Sun Indoor Championships, the ETSU track and field program travels to Penn State University for the single-day Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup on Saturday at the Nittany Lions’ Ashenfelter III Indoor Track starting at 9 a.m.

30 collegiate track and field teams in all will be competing in University Park on Saturday, including Appalachian State, Binghamton, Buffalo, Coastal Carolina, Connecticut (M), Cornell, ETSU, Jacksonville (W), James Madison (W), Kent State, Liberty, Lock Haven, Penn State, Princeton, UNC-Wilmington, West Virginia (W) and Western Carolina.

ETSU comes off a weekend in which it hosted the 34th annual Niswonger Invitational inside the ETSU/MSHA Athletic Center. The Bucs finished in the top-five in numerous events throughout the weekend, and were commended by assistant coach Eli Sunquist who stated, “This was by far our best meet of the year,” at the conclusion of the Invitational.

The Buccaneers have enjoyed much success through the 2012 indoor season, resulting in two A-Sun Field Athlete of the Week honors on the men’s side, along with three such honors for the women. Of the five combined weekly award winners, two have come from ETSU’s freshmen class as newcomers K’vonte Scott (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Katerina Vodova (Humpolec, Czech Republic) were each recognized the week of Jan. 25.

Scott, who broke ETSU’s heptathlon record by scoring 4,834 points in the event at the CNU Captains Invitational and Multis, is also a candidate for the Crons Brand Achiever award. The award recognizes one student-athlete from the Atlantic Sun Conference for his or her performance each month.

During Saturday’s meet, Penn State will also be hosting its second-annual “Compete for a Cure,” in order to help fundraise toward breast cancer research. Donation opportunities will be available for those at the event, including t-shirt and wristband sales, and a silent auction.
