Buccaneers begin 2012-13 indoor season

CLEMSON, S.C. (Nov. 30, 2012) – The ETSU men’s and women’s track and field teams take to their first meet of the 2012-13 indoor season on Saturday, as they head to Clemson for the Orange and Purple Winter Classic at the Clemson Indoor Track & Field Complex.

The meet is scheduled for just one day, beginning at 10 a.m., with the 60m hurdles portion of the pentathlon. The men’s shot put gets the field events underway at 10 a.m., as well, with the women’s portion to follow. The meet concludes with the men’s and women’s 4x400m relays at 3:20 and 3:45 p.m., respectively.

Fourteen other schools will be joining the Buccaneers and Clemson on Saturday, including Charlotte, Coastal Carolina, Georgia Tech and Vanderbilt. League foe USC Upstate will also be competing.

For Director of ETSU Cross Country/Track & Field George Watts, Saturday will also be the first time he has led his new squads to a meet. Watts was named to his position on Aug. 9, and led the men’s cross country team to a second place finish at the Atlantic Sun Championships, its best since 2009. The women’s team took fifth at the conference meet, which was its best result in eight all-time meets since joining the league in 2005.

As for the track and field side of things, the ETSU men are coming off a second-place finish at last year’s A-Sun Indoor Championships. Kennesaw State barely edged the Bucs by five points, 177-172, after holding a 26-point lead following the meet’s opening day. The ETSU women took fourth at the conference meet, but put together its highest-ever point total in seven years of competing with 107 points.
