ETSU looks to maintain momentum after placing in 14 events at 49er Classic
CULLOWHEE, N.C. (March 22, 2013) – The ETSU men’s and women’s track & field teams will carry on the outdoor season when they travel to Cullowhee, N.C. to participate in the Beynon Sports Surface Catamount Classic at Western Carolina University on March 22-23.
After turning in a strong showing at the Charlotte 49er Classic last weekend in which the Buccaneers placed in the top three in 14 events, ETSU aims to take another step toward a highly-successful outdoor campaign this weekend at the Catamount Classic. The event will get underway with the men’s decathlon at 2 p.m. and will continue with competition in various field events throughout. The day will conclude with multiple long-distance events, with the final one set to begin around 7 p.m. Competition will continue on Saturday with the men’s hammer throw first, followed by other field events. Running events will begin at noon and will end with the men’s 4x400 relay at roughly 5:30 p.m.
Joining the Buccaneers will be roughly 20 other track & field squads from throughout the southeast including host Western Carolina, Tennessee Tech, UT- Chattanooga, Wofford, UNC Asheville, USC Upstate, Brevard College, King College, Converse College, Emory & Henry, Lenior- Rhyne College, Livingstone, Mars Hill, Milligan, North Greenville, Piedmont, Tennessee Temple, Tennessee Wesleyan and University of the South.
“We have had another good week of training and we hope for some positive performances this weekend,” said Director of ETSU Track & Field/Cross Country George Watts. “We will travel most of the people we held out last week, along with a few that competed at Charlotte. Our goal is to improve on our competitiveness and hope for some personal bests.”
The Buccaneers will be sending a number of student-athletes to compete in various events. The man who stole the headlines last weekend with his record-breaking performance at the Charlotte 49er Classic, Ifrish Alberg (Paramaribo, Suriname), will not compete in the 100m dash this weekend but may see action in other running events. Senior Tim O’Dell (Palm Coast, Fla.) aims to have another strong performance in the 400m after placing first last weekend and another solid relay from the men’s 4x800 team would bode well for the remainder of the outdoor campaign.
On the women’s side, the Buccaneers hope they can build off of their school record in the 4x100 at the 49er Classic and continue their progression in the middle and long-distance events. Sophomore Demetria Edgecombe (Spartanburg, S.C.) will also hope to prolong her development after setting a school record in the 100m hurdles last weekend and will look to hit her stride again at the Catamount Classic where she turned in a second-place finish in the same event last season. A consistent effort in the triple jump from Kelly Monteleone (Pittsburgh, Pa.) has grown to be expected and increased improvement from freshman throwers Tyesha Jones (Nashville, Tenn.) and Verena Tobis (Hechingen, Germany) will be a great sign for ETSU going forward.
