Four individuals; women’s team earn All-Academic honors

NEW ORLEANS (July 25, 2013) – A host of ETSU track & field student-athletes garnered All-Academic individual honors while the women’s track & field team took home an All-Academic team honor, the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Wednesday.

ETSU is one of only a handful of Atlantic Sun institutions with student-athletes being selected to the USTFCCCA All-Academic team and also having a women’s track & field team gaining an All-Academic team accolade.

For the men, soon-to-be senior Tyler Stepp (Dandridge, Tenn.) earned the honor with a 3.47 cumulative grade point average (GPA) in interdisciplinary studies on top of a stellar athletic season in which he advanced to the NCAA Championships and notched Second-Team All-America status.

A trio of ETSU women was also selected to the All-Academic team including Courtney Kinlaw (Myrtle Beach, S.C.), Verena Tobis (Hechingen, Germany) and Keturah Williams (Alpharetta, Ga.).

Kinlaw, who carried a 3.40 cumulative GPA in kinesiology, and Williams, who earned a 3.53 GPA in art, were both members of the women’s record-breaking 4x100 meter relay team that advanced to the NCAA Championships which propelled each to honorable mention All-America honors.

Tobis garnered her individual honor with a 4.00 GPA in mass communications along with a solid athletic season as well. The freshman medaled gold in the javelin throw and silver in the discus throw at the 2013 A-Sun Outdoor Championships and most recently competed in the German National Championships under-23 division where she recorded an eighth-place mark of 44.10 meters.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA performance list provided by TFRRS.org; for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).

A total of 448 student-athletes were named to the All-Academic squad.

The women’s track & field team received its honor by registering a 3.37 cumulative team GPA. To be eligible for USTFCCCA All-Academic status, teams must hold a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher.

As a whole, 187 Division I programs achieved All-Academic status. Arkansas was named the Scholar Team of the Year for the indoor season, while Central Florida was honored as the Scholar Team of the Year for the outdoor season.
