Simeon Roberts places first in the men’s mile run with a collegiate-best time of 4:15.43

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (Feb. 1, 2014) – The ETSU men’s and women’s track & field teams wrapped up competition Saturday at the Hilton Garden Invitational with top-three finishes in five events inside the JDL Fast Track Indoor Track & Field Facility.

“We had some good things happen today,” said ETSU Director of Track & Field/Cross Country George Watts.  “A couple of school records were set over the weekend, as well as getting some wins.”

ETSU’s momentum in distance events continued with Simeon Roberts (Greeneville, Tenn.) placing first in the men’s mile run with a collegiate-high time of 4:15.43. Also for the men, the team of Mike Williams (Mt. Laurel, N.J.), Dexter Ratcliff (Morristown, Tenn.), Jonathan Foote (Bristol, Tenn.) and Thomas Miller (Lithonia, Ga.) placed third in the 4x400 meter relay with a 3:22.88 time.

In the field, the men found success in a number of events including a second-place leap from Ryan Beaver (Virginia Beach, Va.) in the long jump with a mark of 6.98. In the heptathlon pole vault, Stephond Allmond (Memphis, Tenn.) recorded a runner-up finish with a leap of 4.20 meters.

Following yesterday’s second-place finish in the women’s 60 meter hurdle prelims, Dede Edgecombe (Spartanburg, S.C.) placed similarly with a runner-up standing and a collegiate-best tying 8.51 time in the event final. This time ties the ETSU women’s 60 meter indoor record that Edgecombe had previously set. In the field for the women, Katerina Vodova (Humpolec, Czech Republic) highlighted the Buccaneers with a mark of 5.73 meters in the long jump a day after setting the ETSU indoor record in the women’s pole vault with a launch of 3.80 meters.

The ETSU track & field program will be back in action Feb. 7-8 in the Samford Multi and Invitational in Birmingham, Ala.

“Our young kids struggled some today and they will need to fight through some adversity quickly before we head down to Birmingham next weekend,” said Watts. “We need to toughen up in some areas as we head into our final meet before the conference.”
