ETSU posts three top-three standings on Friday

RALEIGH, N.C. (March 28, 2014) – The ETSU track & field program had a solid showing, including four top-three finishes, on day one at the Raleigh Relays on Friday at the Paul Derr Track & Field Facility on the North Carolina State University campus.

Like last week, ETSU again competed a limited number of student-athletes to begin competition. With many making their first appearance in this outdoor season and others resting after last week’s Charlotte 49er Classic, holdovers such as Brett Squibbs (Rock Hill, S.C.) Katerina Vodova (Humpolec, Czech Republic) and Dede Edgecombe (Spartanburg, S.C.) continued the momentum established a week prior.

After taking second-place in the seeded pole vault event last week, freshman Squibbs one-upped himself this week by taking the top spot in the invite on Friday with a vault of 4.95 meters.

In the women’s long jump, Vodova did better than last week’s second-place, wind-aided jump of 5.90 meters with a wind-aided launch of 6.08 meters to earn second today.

Continuing her impressive stretch in the women’s 100 meter hurdles, Edgecombe again impressed in prelim action on Friday with a runner-up placement and a 13.70 time. This prelim standing places the junior among the top-eight who will race in Saturday’s event final.

Additionally, junior Adam Chase (Kingsport, Tenn.), too, garnered a second-place standing with a time of 9:10.28 in the men's 3000 meter steeplechase section A.

Also prolonging the momentum gained last week, Verena Tobis (Hechingen, Germany) finished seventh with a collegiate-best toss of 47.09 meter in the discus throw after taking first in the event in Charlotte with a throw of 45.38 meters.

Making his first appearance of the outdoor season, senior Tyler Stepp (Dandridge, Tenn.) registered a leap of 6.99 meters in the men’s long jump to finish ninth overall in the invite.

In addition, the duo from Oak Ridge, Tenn., James Miller and Matt Moore, posted their first marks of this outdoor season with a collegiate-high time of 15:16.95 in the men’s 5000 meter run and a dash of 10.86 in the men’s 100 meter, respectively.

Events will pick back up on Saturday, beginning first with distance and relay events like the 10,000 meter run and the 4x1500 meter relay in the late morning. Relay events will run until 4:45 p.m. with the 4x400 meter relay ending track events. Competition in the field will commence with the men’s hammer throw at 10 a.m. and action at the Relays will conclude with the women’s triple jump at 2 p.m.
