This season’s slate features ETSU hosting a pair of indoor meets for the first time in a number of years

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Dec. 16, 2014) – ETSU Director of Track & Field George Watts announced Tuesday the complete 2015 track & field schedule, as well as the signing of Kyra Atkins (Greenville, S.C.) to a National Letter of Intent during the recent early signing period.

The complete 2015 slate, including both indoor and outdoor meets, will kickoff on the weekend of Jan. 16 -17, 2015 with hosting the ETSU Track & Field Invitational inside the ETSU/MSHA Athletics Center on David E. Walker Track at Gentry Field. Previously known as the annual Niswonger Invitational, the event will be the same as years past with hundreds of student-athletes from 20-plus schools from throughout the region competing. More information about the meet can be accessed here, while the meet schedule can be seen here.

Also in the month of January, the Bucs will compete in the Virginia Tech Invitational (Jan. 23 – 24), and the Hilton Garden Innvitational (Jan. 30 – 31) in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Continuing into February, ETSU will host another meet; this time the Buccaneer Track & Field Invitational on Feb. 6 and 7. From Feb. 13 – 14, the Blue & Gold will also compete in the Samford Invitational and two weeks later the Buccaneer women will return to the same facility in Birmingham, Alabama to compete in the 2015 Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships (Feb. 27 – 28).

Qualifying teams and student-athletes will then have the opportunity to compete in the 2015 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in mid-March in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

“Our indoor and outdoor meet schedules are similar to previous years,” said Watts. “Most significantly, we are excited about hosting two indoor meets for the first time in many years. The opportunity to compete on your home track is very special and adds extra incentive for the student-athletes to perform well for their parents and fans.”

The Outdoor season will begin with participation in the Charlotte 49er Classic (March 19 – 21) and will continue that month with competition in the Raleigh Relays (March 27 – 28).

April will prove to be a busy month for ETSU with competition in three separate meets: April 2 – 4 at the University of Florida Relays, April 9 – 11 at the University of Tennessee Relays and April 25 – 26 at the 2015 Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Birmingham.

“Obviously, the other big change will be our first year competing in the Southern Conference. We expect the competition to be challenging, and we will need to elevate our performance level.”

With an earlier than usual conference meet, the Bucs will compete in the University of Tennessee Challenge on May 2 before qualifying teams and student-athletes will have the opportunity to compete in the NCAA East Region Preliminaries May 28 – 30 in Jacksonville, Florida and the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships June 10 -13 in Eugene, Oregon.

“Along with entering a new and challenging conference, we always have a goal of qualifying student-athletes for the NCAA Championships. We hope to make this our third year in a row of an ETSU student-athlete competing on the biggest stage for track & field in college athletics.”

With this year’s track & field season nearly upon us, ETSU also has a lot to be excited about for next year with the signing of Kyra Atkins during the recent early signing period.

Atkins, a multi-faceted athlete from J.L. Mann High School in Greenville, South Carolina, has the opportunity to make an immediate impact at ETSU. This year, the track & field standout won outdoor regional titles in the 100-meter hurdles (14.63 seconds), the triple jump (36 feet, 7.5 inches) and the long jump (17-6) as a high school junior.

“Kyra is a very talented young lady and is well coached at JL Mann High School,” said Watts. “She excels in several jumping events the 100-meter hurdles as well as adding depth to our relay squads.”

The first member of the 2015-16 recruiting class, Atkins has Watts, and the rest of the ETSU coaching staff, excited about this great, early addition to the program.

“Our staff is very grateful that Kyra has the faith and confidence in our program to become our first signee of the year. She makes this a great start to the 2015-16 freshman class. She has a chance to be in the hunt for several conference scoring spots her first year at ETSU.”
