CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 18, 2015) – The ETSU track & field program will begin the 2015 outdoor season this weekend when it competes at the Charlotte 49er Classic, Thursday – Saturday, at the Bell Track & Field Center.

ETSU has competed at the 49er Classic each of the past four seasons including, most recently, numerous top-five event finishes at the meet last year.

Competition at the Bell Track & Field Center will begin on Thursday with heptathlon and decathlon events beginning at 11 and 11:45 a.m., respectively. Action will pick back up on Friday with the women’s hammer throw at 11 a.m. Running events will start at 1 p.m. with the women’s 100-meter hurdles and will continue throughout the afternoon and into the night. The men’s 5000-meter run will wrap up action on Friday at 9:15 p.m. On Saturday, competition will commence at 10 a.m. with the men’s shot put, while running events will begin at noon with the 4x100-meter relay. Action at the 49er Classic will wrap up with the 4x400-meter relays at approximately 4:30 p.m.

Both teams will look to get off to solid starts to begin the outdoor season after successful indoor campaigns. The men experienced successes in distance events including event wins in the distance medley relay, mile run, and 800-meter run throughout the indoor season. The women are coming off of a third-place team finish at the 2015 Southern Conference Indoor Championship and also saw senior hurdler Dede Edgecombe (Spartanburg, S.C.) and sophomore pole vaulter Ashley Kessler (Knoxville, Tenn.) continue to rewrite the ETSU record book in their respective events during the season.

"It's been quite a while since our men's team has competed and I'll be interested to see how they attack the early-season competition."

"Our women are coming off of a solid performance at the indoor conference championship and I expect them to pick up where they left off."

"The Southern Conference Outdoor Championship comes early this year so it is critical that we get off to a strong start, but also come out of the meet healthy and ready for the following weekend in Raleigh, North Carolina."
