Michael Williams, Kyra Atkins and Brett Squibbs will head to Jacksonville next weekend for the NCAA East Prelims

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (May 20, 2016) – On Friday it was announced that three members of the ETSU Track and Field program have qualified to compete in the NCAA East Preliminaries next weekend in Jacksonville, Fla.
 
"We are very happy to have three individual qualified for the NCAA East Prelims," said director of track & field George Watts. "Our goal each year is to qualify as many as possible to this meet and the NCAA Finals in Eugene." 
 
Junior Michael Williams (Mt.Laurel, N.J.) for the third straight year has qualified for the NCAA East Prelims in the 400 meter hurdles. Williams was the Southern Conference Champion in the 400mH for the second straight year and had the 35th fastest time in the NCAA in the event. During the outdoor season, Williams posted a collegiate best time of 51.27 in the 400mH at the Georgia Tech Invitational on April 22. 
 
Joining Williams on the men's side is junior Brett Squibbs (Rock Hill, S.C.) who had the 31st highest mark in the NCAA East Region in the pole vault at 16' 9.25" (5.11 meters). Squibbs was runner-up at the SoCon Championships last weekend in the pole vault despite recording the seasonal best mark. 
 
"This will be their third time competing in this meet and experience counts for something and they are prepared to go up against the best in the region," said Watts. 
 
On the women's side the lone qualifier is freshman Kyra Atkins (Greer, S.C) in the 100 meter hurdles. Atkins with a time of 13.42 ranked 29th in the NCAA East Region. Atkins is coming off an impressive weekend at the SoCon Championships claiming two individual titles in the women's long jump and 100mH. 
 
Earlier this week, Atkins was named SoCon Outdoor Track and Field Freshman of the Year. The Greer, S.C., native also earned Freshman of the Year honors during the indoor season. 
 
"This is Kyra's first regional and we have high expectations for her now and in the future," said Watts. "She's had a spectacular freshman year and this is another small step in her development."
 
"Kyra, Mike and Brett have earned their ways with performances that rank them near the top half of the field in their respective event," said Watts. "
 
The meet will begin on Thursday in the field as Squibbs will be the first Buccaneer to compete with the first round of the men's pole vault beginning at 4:30 p.m. Williams will begin his quest towards the NCAA Championships shortly after at 5:00 p.m. in the first round of the 400mH. Rounding out Thursday will be Atkins in the first round of the 100mH at 6:30 p.m.
 
The NCAA East Preliminaries are next weekend, May 26-28 in Jacksonville, Fla. and is hosted by the University of North Florida at Hodges Stadium. The top 12 times from each event will advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene,Ore., June 8-11.
