SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Feb. 7, 2018) – Coming off another record-setting performance at the Buccaneer Track and Field Invitational last week, ETSU’s Ben Johnson (Nashville, Tenn.) earned the men’s field Southern Conference Athlete of the Week award, the league office announced Wednesday.
This accolade marks the second consecutive week Johnson has won the men’s field award.
After breaking his own personal and school weight throw records to open the season last month ago and again doing so at the VMI Team Challenge two weeks ago, the redshirt junior did it again, tossing a 21.39m mark to put him 17th nationally on the NCAA performance list for the event.
"I can't think of a more deserving athlete to earn an Athlete of the Week Award,” said ETSU Director of Track and Field George Watts. He's broken and re-broken the school record in all three meets we've contested. He set a meet record this past weekend with a mark that currently ranks him 17th in NCAA, and to be SoCon Athlete of the Week two weeks in a row is icing on the cake.”
Johnson’s mark exceeded the second best weight throw by nearly four meters. It also exceeded his last record setting mark by over a meter, as he threw 20.15 meters at VMI. In the Southern Conference, Johnson's men's weight mark exceeds the rest of the conference by over 10 feet.
Johnson also competed in the men’s shot put last week, placing fourth among attached participants with a throw of 15.07 meters.
