LYNCHBURG, Va. (Feb. 9, 2018) – The ETSU track and field team will compete away from Johnson City for the second time this indoor season at the Liberty Elite Invitational in Lynchburg, Va. Saturday.
This meet sandwiches between last week’s Buccaneer Track and Field Invitational — which closed out the home indoor season — and the 2018 Southern Conference Indoor Championships set for Feb. 24-25 in Lexington, Va.
“We have an opportunity to get on another nice facility this weekend,” said ETSU Director of Track and Field George Watts. “We competed pretty hard last week and will limit the number of events most of our kids will contest in. We've been hit pretty hard with sicknesses this week and will be forced to hold out seven or eight athletes originally scheduled to compete.”
Eight collegiate teams entered at least one athlete in the meet, including Charlotte, East Carolina, High Point, North Carolina A&T, Elon, Charleston Southern and the hosting Liberty Flames.
Among the athletes from competing schools, ETSU’s Kyra Atkins (Greer, S.C.), Ben Johnson (Nashville, Tenn,) and Harper Sigler (Bogart, Ga.) each hold top marks in specific events vs. their competition.
Atkins owns the fastest times in the 60 meter hurdles and 200 meter dash, while Johnson holds the top men’s weight mark this season. Sigler holds the top 500 meter run time over competitors from other schools such as Liberty, East Carolina and Charleston Southern.
Watts said the team has two objectives heading into the Liberty Indoor Track Complex: get better and stay healthy.
“The key is to have a solid meet with some improvements in areas, but also to come out of the meet healthy and ready to prepare for the conference meet scheduled in two weeks,” he said.
