ETSU freshman football crossover athlete wins track and field award

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Feb. 10, 2018) – The Southern Conference announced its indoor track and field specialty awards Wednesday, as ETSU’s Karon Delince (Phenix City, Ala.) earned the Male Freshman of the Year award.

Delince scored in four events at the SoCon Indoor Championships this year, winning the 200-meter dash to become a conference champions in his debut.

“Karon has accomplished much in a short period of time,” said ETSU Director of Track and Field George Watts. “Amazingly, with just five weeks of training time prior to the SoCon Championships, he made the medal stand in three events and just missed out on a fourth.

“He was clearly the top freshmen in the conference and was our high point scorer for the men's team. As impressive as he was in the open events I appreciate how much of a team player he is by him running the 4x400m relay at the end of the meet.”

Field wise, Delince also scored in the long jump, earning a second place finish.

On the track, Delince followed up his 200m dash victory with a fourth place showing in the 60 meter dash and also took part in a third place finish as the second leg on the 4x400 meter relay team.

All three individual events for Delince inside VMI’s Corps Physical Training Facility resulted in personal records. Delince made his track and field debut in the same facility as part of the VMI Team Challenge Feb. 2, slightly beating both marks from his debut in the 60 meter dash and long jump.

Delince is a multi-sport athlete who also lettered on the ETSU football team this year, playing in 10 of 11 games as a true freshman with 13 tackles and two kick returns.
