Bucs' First in 22 Years; Sweeps '18 Indoor & Outdoor Awards

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (May 16, 2018) – ETSU won seven titles at the Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships – three last Thursday and four last Friday – and made program history on Wednesday.

The Bucs’ Karon Delince (Phenix, Ala.) is the SoCon’s Men’s Freshman of the Year, as voted on by the conference’s coaches. He posted one victory and three podium finishes, and put up in five events, in last weekend's meet in Cullowhee, N.C.

The Outdoor award means a 2018 FOTY sweep for Delince. He won Indoor honors after putting up points in four events at the conference meet in February in Lexington, Va.

At the Outdoor meet, Delince won the 200 meter dash on Friday by the barest of margins, getting to the tape a mere one-hundredth of a second ahead of Josiah Johnson of The Citadel in a personal-best time of :21.25.

Delince set another PR of :10.51 in the 100 meters earlier Friday, getting on the podium with a 3rd-place result. On Thursday, he finished 8th in the long jump. Delince was also part of both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 meter relay teams, which each finished 3rd.

"Congratulations to Karon for garnering his second freshman of the year award this year," said Bucs head coach George Watts. "It's difficult enough to duplicate a performance from one season to the next, but when you consider Karon missed track practice while participating in spring football, you realize how special a dual sport athlete he is.

Delince, a defensive back/kick returner for the Bucs' football team, appeared in 10 games in the 2017 season.

"A big thank you goes out to Coach (Randy) Sanders for allowing Karon and others to be valuable, contributing members of the Track and Field team," Watts said.

At February’s Indoor meet, Delince won the 200 meters, was 2nd in the long jump, and placed 4th in the 60 meter dash. He was also part of the 4 x 400 meter relay team, which finished 3rd.

Delince is the first ETSU athlete to earn Men’s Outdoor FOTY honors in 22 years and the third all-time. He joins Danion Sidney (1994) and Zach Whitmarsh (1996), each of whom also swept Indoor and Outdoor honors.

Delince was the fifth Buc to be named Indoor FOTY, along with Sidney, Whitmarsh, Evan Hawkins (1998) and Shane Estes (2005).
