Johnson, Varghese and Brown take three of the four track and field conference awards for February

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (March 5, 2019) – February was a month to remember for ETSU Track and Field, as the Southern Conference announced on Tuesday that three of the four track and field SoCon Athletes of the Month represented the Bucs.

Redshirt senior Ben Johnson (Nashville), sophomore Ben Varghese (Kingsport) and true freshman Mekayla Brown (Elgin, S.C.) were each recognized for their February contributions, with Johnson and Varghese winning the award in back-to-back months. Brown is a first time winner of the award.

Johnson had four victories to cap off his final indoor season in the month of February, including a sweep of the men’s weight throw and shot put events at the Southern Conference Indoor Championships Feb. 23-24.

Among his highlights, Johnson set a personal record in the shot put for his final indoor attempt at 16.39 meters, while throwing a season-high mark of 21.60m to double as the conference weight-throwing champion.

Varghese won his third Athlete of the Month honor for the 2018-19 season, earning the award in September during cross-country season and in January and February for track and field. The sophomore had two wins in February, including a conference championship in the men’s 3K.

Varghese kicked off the month with a personal record in the men’s mile, blowing past the competition with a time of 4:07.30 at the Buccaneer Track and Field Invitational. The Daniel Boone graduate also scored in the mile at the SoCon Indoor Championships with a fourth place finish.

Brown capped off February with a number of “first” and three personal records in both track and field events. The versatile freshman had back-to-back wins in the long jump and triple jump at the Buccaneer Track and Field Invitational to begin a stellar month.

The Elgin, S.C. native scored in three of her four events at the SoCon Championships, including a second place finish in the triple jump, a fifth place finish in the long jump and a personal best qualifying time in the 60 meter dash before placing seventh in the final.
