Johnson City, Tenn. - East Tennessee State University announced the Buccaneer football schedules through the 2002 season along with a plan to continue to finance and operate the football program at the I-AA level in the Southern Conference.
In addition to the regular nine-game Southern Conference slate, the 2000 schedule includes away games at Liberty University and Colorado State, as well as a season-ending home game versus Charleston Southern. Charleston Southern will continue to be on the Buccaneer schedule through 2002. Both the 2001 and 2002 schedules will include away games versus I-A opponents that will be named in the near future. In addition, the Bucs will enter into a home and home agreement with new I-AA member Gardner Webb College beginning in 2001.
"We are excited about the schedule for the next three years. We believe we have developed a good mix of non-conference opponents that will provide attractive competition and important revenue to finance our program," said Pergolizzi. "We do have verbal agreements for the 2001 and 2002 I-A games and hope to be able to finalize those games shortly."
Pergolizzi also announced a funding plan for the football program. The University will establish a level of funding for football scholarships from the base athletic department budget and guarantee net revenue from from I-A games. Private support through the 12th Man Fund will support any remaining scholarships up to the current I-AA maximum of 63.
For the Fall of 2000, the University will fund approximately 57 scholarships from the base budget and guarantee revenue. The additional six scholarships will be funded through private support. The formula for 2001 and 2002 will be finalized as soon as those schedules are complete.
"We certainly expect to continue to operate a fully funded I-AA football program. We believe that this formula will enable us to not only continue the football program but also to provide an avenue to continue to improve our ability to successfully compete in the Southern Conference," said Pergolizzi. "In addition, these strategies are very much in line with the recommendations of the Intercollegiate Athletics Task Force this past spring."
