JOHNSON CITY, Tenn.-- The East Tennessee State University men's tennis squad opened the 2001 Spring season by faling to the 68th-ranked William and Mary Tribe, 6-1 from the Cedar Bluff Racquet Club in Knoxville, Tenn.
William and Mary's Trevor Spracklin defeated ETSU's Gustavo Gomez in a tight match, 7-5, 7-5. W & M's Pat Brown defeated Buccaneer Marcos Pavlovich, 7-6, 6-4. The Tribe's Brian Lubin defeated Roberto Fernandez of ETSU, 6-2, 6-4. ETSU's Juan Yannuzzi fell to William and Mary's Geoff Russell, 6-3, 6-4. Pablo Sahagun claimed the lone Buccaneer point of the evening, defeating the Tribe's Chris Erickson, 6-2, 6-0. Matt Davis of William and Mary defeated Antonio Bugge in the final singles match, 7-6, 6-2.
William and Mary claimed the doubles point after sweeping three doubles matches from the Buccaneers. Trevor Spracklin and Pat Brown defeated Roberto Fernandez and Juan Yannuzzi, 8-4. Geoff Russell and Brian Lubin downed Gustavo Gomez and Pablo Sahagun, also by a 8-4 score. Marcos Pavlovich and Antonio Bugge fell to Chris Erickson and Brooks, 8-4. This is a tough start for our team. Said coach Dave Mullins. We played some tight matches and had a few chances to win some sets but we lost some tie-breakers and some 7-6 sets. We competed well, we just have to get more match-tough. ETSU plays against another nationally-ranked squad tomorrow, the 40th-ranked Kentucky Wildcats at 7:30 p.m. from the Cedar Bluff Racquet Club in Knoxville, Tenn.. We look forward to playing Kentucky tomorrow, they are a very talented and tough team and we look forward to bouncing back from today's matches, said Mullins.
