Saturday, April 21, 2001Johnson City, Tenn. -- The East Tennessee State mens track & field team finished fifth while the womens squad finished sixth at the 2001 Southern Conference Track & Field Outdoor Championships.
The Bucs captured three individual titles and one relay title in the event. On the mens side, senior Jason Farr won the high jump by clearing the bar at 605.05". Andrew Whitson continued his dominance of the decathlon by winning the event yesterday.
In one of the weekends most exciting races, junior Roseline Addo (:55.19) edged teammate Jennifer Howard by .24 seconds to capture the 400 meters title. Howard and Addo also dueled in the 200 meters, finishing fourth and fifth respectively. The womens 4x400 meter relay squad outran the competition by four seconds and won the race with a time of 3:48.26.
In the Southern Conference Championships the top three athletes in each event earn All-Southern Conference honors. In addition to ETSUs champions, the other Bucs to earn All-SoCon honors were: Lauren Campbell, Josh Artau and Evan Hawkins.
Campbell finished second in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:39.10. She also competed in the 800 meters, finishing fifth with a time of 2:19.45.
Artau dominated the throwing events for the Bucs. He finished second in the shot put (4801.25"), third in the javelin (17205") and eigth in the discus (12900"). Senior Evan Hawkins concluded his dazzling career with two second-place finishes -- in the 200 meters (:21.6) and 400 meters (:47.56). Hawkins placed eighth in the 100 meter dash with a time of :12.07.
Appalachian State captured the mens title while Western Carolina earned the womens championship.
