Tuesday, September 25, 2001Johnson City, Tenn. -- The East Tennessee State volleyball team won their fourth consecutive match as they defeated Southern Conference rival Appalachian State, 3-0 Tuesday night from Brooks Gym. The Buccaneers (7-1, 4-1 SoCon) jumped out to a 6-0 lead, but Appalachian State (0-11, 0-5) came right back to tie the match at six. East Tennessee State would then outscore Appalachian State 24-13 over the rest of the opening stanza to take game one 30-19. Game two was similar to game one as the Bucs would jump out to a 7-0 lead. The Mountaineers would climb back into the game and the challenge ETSU's lead. Appalachian State fought back to 29-23, but ETSU was able to get the decisive point, to take game two 30-23. Game three was even closer than the first two, with Appalachian State jumping out to an early lead. The Mountaineers had a 5-2 lead, but the Bucs quickly swarmed back and took the lead 8-7. The Bucs would hold the lead for the rest of the game, but Appalachian State challenged, getting as close as 19-17 and paring the lead to four before the Bucs took game three 30-25. The Bucs were led by senior setter Carey Cavanaugh, who collected a game-high 29 assists and added five kills and eight digs. Sophomore Kate Steidle led the Bucs with 11 kills and nine digs. Appalachian State was led by Karen Reynolds, who tallied a game high 12 kills. Alexis Mosely had a game-high 15 digs and Amber Mangrum had a team-high 14 assists. The Bucs return to Brooks Gym Friday night at 7 p.m. against College of Charleston before hosting The Citadel (11 a.m.) and Lipscomb University (3 p.m.) on Saturday.
