Thursday, February 14, 2002Boone, N. C. (February 14, 2002) - East Tennessee State's track teams took part in the Valentine's Day Invitational hosted by Appalachian State University on Thursday. Freshman runners had all three ETSU victories during the meet. In the 800m, Kim Simmons (Knoxville, Tenn.) edged out sophomore Tiffany Collier (Atlanta, Ga.) by less than a second to win in 2:24.30. James Grufferty won the 3000m in 8:42.10, which set an arena record at ASU by .90 seconds. Distance runner Brad Yewer (Newbury, England) won the 800m in 1:57.00. The women's team earned several top-10 finishes. Collier finished second in the 800m in 2:25.70 and took third in the 200m in 26 seconds. Jennifer Habbestad (Tampa, Fla.) ran a 2:36.20 to take fourth spot. In the 1000m run, senior Lauren Campbell (Powell, Tenn.) earned fifth with a time of 3:03.20. Freshman Tawny Davis (Austin, Texas) ran the 200m in 27.70 seconds to earn fourth place. On the men's side, Yewer finished the 1000m run in 2:36.30 to take second place. In the men's 200m dash, David Cabbler (Roanoke, Va.) earned fifth spot (22.80 seconds) while teammate Kaylin Chesney (Knoxville, Tenn.) took sixth place in 22.90 seconds. Jon Shaw (Roanoke, Va.) and Nick Andrews (Atlanta, Ga.) tied for ninth in the 200m with a time of 23.30 seconds. The team heads to Knoxville, Tenn. to compete in the Tennessee Indoor Invitational on Friday, Feb. 15th at the Stokely Athletics Center.
