Sunday, May 09, 2004JOHNSON CITY, TENN. (May 8, 2004) - The East Tennessee State (28-32, 8-13 SoCon) softball squad defeated the Furman Lady Paladins (15-46, 7-13 SoCon) in timely fashion with a final score of 4-0 this afternoon at Metro-Kiwanis Park. The final game of the 2004 regular season for the Bucs showcased a top pitching performance from senior Tiffany McVay (Soddy-Daisy, Tenn.) who tied her career high with her 14 win of the season. Scoring began for the Bucs in the bottom of the third when right fielder Janine Sprague (Hillsborough, N.C.) hit a two-out single to center field. McVay stepped to the plate forcing a walk from Paladin pitcher Rachel Henley who then allowed ETSU's Dani Spetar (Knoxville, Tenn.) a single scoring Sprague from second. After a Lindsay Lane (Erwin, Tenn.) double scoring McVay, the score stood at 2-0 in the Bucs favor. Furman was unable to spark their offensive throughout the seven-inning match-up, as ETSU posted two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning off a Mary Beth Hazelwood (Knoxville, Tenn.) walk, Spetar single and Sprague triple. The two-run effort for the home squad secured the 4-0 win for the Lady Bucs. McVay allowed just two hits, one walk and tallied two strikeouts in the complete-game win, while Lady Paladins pitcher Henley allowed seven hits and four ETSU runs. The Lady Bucs and Lady Paladins will both travel to UT Chattanooga May 13 to begin play in the Southern Conference Championship Tournament, check www.etsubucs.com for game times and results.
