Saturday, December 06, 2003CINCINNATI, Ohio (Dec. 6, 2003) - The East Tennessee State women's basketball team fought valiantly to take the lead late in the second half, but High Point regained the advantage and held on for a 53-51 victory over the Lady Bucs Saturday afternoon from the Provident Bank Invitational hosted by Xavier University at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. High Point (4-2) held the lead, 53-51, at halftime, but the Lady Bucs presented a much bigger challenge in the second half. After shooting just 24 percent (7-of-29) in the first half, ETSU shot the ball at a 50 percent clip (12-of-24) in the second stanza. The Lady Bucs (0-4, 0-1 Southern Conference) tied the game at 38 on a three pointer by freshman guard Holly Moring (Irmo, S.C.) midway through the second half. ETSU took their first lead of the afternoon, 42-40, after a pair of made free throws by junior forward Tiffani Mayes (Sumter, S.C.). ETSU held a 51-50 lead with just over a minute remaining, but Panther guard Shorty Martin hit a layup with 51 seconds remaining to give High Point the lead for good. The Panthers played excellent defense down the stretch, as the Lady Bucs did not convert on a field goal attempt in the last 3:09 of the game. The Lady Bucs were led by Mayes, who had a monster game with 17 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. It was also a career-high in rebounds for Mayes, as she turned in her second-consecutive double-double and led the team in scoring for the fourth straight-game.
