JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Aug. 6, 2004) - East Tennessee State University men's basketball coach Murry Bartow released the Buccaneers' 2004-05 hoops schedule on Friday, a slate that includes 14 home games, a visit from Western Athletic Conference foe Fresno State, and trips to Southeastern Conference opponent Alabama and in-state rival Memphis.
"Like last year, I think this is a very demanding schedule and it will test our team," said Bartow, whose squad is coming off its second-straight trip to the NCAA Tournament and a fourth-consecutive Southern Conference North Division championship. "The game at Memphis is exciting because it's always good when you can stay in-state and play quality competition. And Alabama will probably be ranked as a preseason top 15 team after making the Great Eight a year ago."
The Bucs will open the year with a Tuesday, Nov. 20 non-conference meeting with UVa.-Wise, followed by a trip to MAC member Marshall on Tuesday, Nov. 23. The early season schedule is highlighted by visits from Fresno State (Nov. 27), College of Charleston (Dec. 4) and Tennessee Tech (Dec. 10), while the Bucs will travel to face major Division I conference foes such as Alabama (Dec. 1), Central Michigan (Dec. 7), Old Dominion (Dec. 18) and Memphis (Dec. 30).
As for the Southern Conference slate, the Bucs will begin with College of Charleston in December, but will start the regular conference schedule on Wednesday, Jan. 5 with a trip to Appalachian State. Other highlights of the SoCon schedule include visits from Appalachian State (Jan. 29), UNC Greensboro (Feb. 12) and Chattanooga (Feb. 21), while the Bucs will travel to Chattanooga (Jan. 22), Davidson (Jan. 26) and Georgia Southern (Feb. 26).
One non-conference game remains to be determined on Feb. 19 and the Southern Conference Tournament will be played March 3-6 in Chattanooga.
"One thing we tried to do was have more home game opportunities for our fans, and we were able to do that going from 12 to 14 home games - the highlights being visits from Fresno State and Tennessee Tech," Bartow said. "I think it's also important to point out the Marshall and Central Michigan games, which are home-and-home series. Overall, it's a good schedule for our fans and our team."
Season tickets for the 2004-05 season will go on sale to the general public on Tuesday, Sept. 7, with new seating available throughout Memorial Center as part of an all-new basketball seating configuration. For more information, call 423-439-ETSU (3878).
