Richmond, Ky. (Sep. 10, 2004) - Despite 14 kills from junior Sara Scandiffio (Purcellville, Va.), the ETSU volleyball squad lost its fifth match of the season at the hands of the Eastern Kentucky Colonel's (19-30, 30-27, 24-30, 18-30) tonight in opening round action at the Nike/Comfort Suites Invitational in Richmond, Ky. The Lady Bucs fall to 0-5 on the season while EKU improves to 6-1 on the year. The Colonels picked up a 30-19 win in game one after racking up a .303 hitting percentage over the first stanza (compared to ETSU's .000 mark). EKU benefited from three kills a piece from freshman Amy Arlinghaus, Aldridge and Guard to pick up the victory. The Buccaneers evened things up by pulling out a 30-27 victory in game two, thanks in part to seven kills from Jennifer Sartor. ETSU rebounded from their game one struggles to hit .292 as a team in the second set. Facing a 1-all tie, the Colonels went on to hit .303 and .395, respectively, over the final two games to pull out the victory. Eastern took a hard-fought 30-24 victory in game three before closing out the match with a 30-18 win in the fourth (where they held ETSU to a .054 hitting percentage). The Lady Bucs managed a hitting percentage of just .140 compared to the .289 of the Colonel's and posted just 7.0 total blocks for the match. Plagued by 16 service errors against just four by the Colonel's, the Lady Bucs were never able to rebound from the high number of unforced errors. "Our team fought very hard tonight, especially during the comeback in the second game. We need to continue to work together as a team and find our weaknesses and improve on them," head coach Lindsey Devine said. In the loss, setter Brittany Kessel (Libertyville, Ill.) managed 38 assists, while Jennifer Sartor (Toronto, Canada) posted 13 kills adding four digs and three service aces on the night. ETSU was led on the defensive side by Karen Freeburg (New Castle, Ind.) with a tally of 11 digs adding one ace and one kill for the match. ETSU will face the University of Evansville at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow and will face Lipscomb at 3:00 p.m. in final day action at the Nike/Comfort Suites Invitational.
