(Oct. 16, 2004) - East Tennessee State University head women's basketball coach Karen Kemp began practice this morning in the Memorial Center, the start of the much anticipated 2004-2005 campaign. Returning two all-conference honorees from last season, while welcoming six newcomers to the floor this year, Kemp and the rest of the ETSU coaching staff is very excited for the season to come.
When asked what she thought the strengths of this year's squad will be, Kemp said, "I think this year's team will be well balanced. Of course we will look to Tiffani Mayes (
Not only will Kemp have an experienced group of veterans returning this fall, but also a hard working and eager group of newcomers, "The freshmen knew when we recruited them last year that they would have to come in and contribute immediately. Every freshman wants the opportunity to play, so they have worked extremely hard this fall in the weight room and on the court so they can help this team achieve our goals."
With the need for a breakout season in 2003-2004 the Lady Bucs accomplished just that. Posting a 13-14 overall record, including the most conference wins in school history with 13, the ETSU women's basketball team looks ahead to the 2004-2005 season with an extremely bright outlook.
"We expect nothing but the best and that is to be SoCon Champs. These expectations never change. This year we have a great group, and after our conference success last season we have a very good feeling about our team this year," Kemp said.
Buccaneer basketball will host fan appreciation day this Sunday, Oct. 17th starting at 4:00 pm in Brooks Gymnasium. The event, which is free to the public, will feature the ETSU cheerleaders and band, Bucky the Mascot, scrimmages by both the men's and women's teams, a free throw shooting contest, a hot shot contest for fans, and an autograph session. Door prizes and other giveaways will also be a part of the day. As always, you can keep up with the Lady Bucs basketball team on www.ETSUBucs.com for results and game recaps.
