Men's tennis heads to prestigious 41st annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (September 18, 2008) - The ETSU men's tennis team looks to continue its success as they travel to the prestigious 41st annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships, Friday and Saturday, at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.

 

The two-day event will feature 179 participants from 32 schools including notable ranked Duke, Florida, Georgia Tech, Middle Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and host and two-time defending NCAA champion Georgia.  

 

This is the oldest collegiate fall tournament in the South. This year notable individual field includes 16 nationally ranked players and two top-10 Division II members.

 

The Bucs are coming off a strong showing in their first fall tournament, the Virginia Fall Classic, last weekend. Leading the way for ETSU was a trio Buccaneers.

 

In bracket A-2 singles play, ETSU's junior newcomer Grega Teraz (Gorenjska, Slovenia), would drop his first match to Eastern Kentucky's Alex Das Izquierdo, before getting hot the remainder of the tournament. In the consultation bracket Teraz would go on a tear, defeating Atlantic Sun rival Maksin Levanovich, of Stetson, in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. In his semifinal match, Teraz would go on to defeat Columbia's Bogdan Borta, before dismissing Nebraska's Francois Van Impe 6-4, 7-5 in the finals.

 

Like his teammate junior Daniel Isaza (Medellin, Columbia), dropped his first round match in bracket B-1, before showing his character and toughness by winning the consolation side. Also the final ETSU player that led the way was freshman Sander Gille (Kuringen, Belgium). This newcomer didn't waste anytime showing his talent. Gille would not drop a set on his way to earning top honors in singles bracket C.
