Enoch, Power post strong fourth-place efforts individually
VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. (Oct. 13, 2009) - After rain forced the cancellation of Monday's first and second rounds in the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, the ETSU men's golf team took advantage of the one-day, one-round event to post its best finish so far this fall season.
The Buccaneers carded a team score of even-par 280 Tuesday at the Old Overton Club, finishing third in a 12-team field that included seven of the nation's Top 50 teams. In fact, ETSU ended the day just four strokes back of No. 5-ranked Texas for second place. Host and No. 42-ranked Alabama captured the team championship by three strokes after posting a team score of 7-under 273.
Individually, ETSU senior Seamus Power (Waterford, Ireland) and junior Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England) led the way for the Bucs, as each posted scores of 2-under-par 68 to finish tied for fourth place on the leaderboard. Hunter Hamrick of Alabama carded a 5-under 65 to win the individual title by one stroke over Texas' Cody Gribble.
"The guys did a good job," said ETSU head coach Fred Warren. "Obviously, Seamus and Rhys played well and I think Michael (Stewart), Devin (Komline) and Peter (Wilson) also did some nice things for us. We fought the weather both days down here, and even though the course was wet it was a good test of golf. One of our former players Keith Nolan traveled with us as an assistant coach this week, and I think he was very helpful. It was good to have him along."
Along with Enoch and Power, sophomores Michael Stewart (Troon, Scotland), Devin Komline (Dorset, Vermont) and Peter Wilson (Locust Valley, N.Y.) offered solid efforts. Stewart finished tied for 16th at even-par 70, while Komline was tied for 44th and Wilson ended the event tied for 50th.
The Bucs return to action this weekend as they host the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges. In its 12th year, the tournament continues a tradition of bringing some of the best teams in college golf to the Tri-Cities region. Admission to the tournament is free and live scoring from the event will be available at Golfstat.com. In addition, ETSUBucs.com will provide a complete wrap up following each day's play.
