JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 28, 2009) - Before competing against some of the top teams in the nation this fall, the ETSU men's tennis team took time out of its busy schedule as the Bucs volunteered their time at the Niswonger Children's Hospital in Johnson City.
ETSU men's tennis student-athletes senior Daniel Isaza (Medelilin, Columbia), junior Grega Teraz (Mojstrana, Slovenia), sophomores Robin Akser (Ornskoldsvik, Sweden), Ofir Weintraub (Rishon Le Zion, Israel) and assistant coach Ricky Rojas - who led the project - visited with a number of children, lifting their spirits in the process.
"I'm extremely proud of Ricky for taking up this project," said head coach Yaser Zaatini. "I know he worked hard figuring out what the Niswonger staff needed from our team. With that process he was able to develop what wishes the hospital needed to make the experience a memorable one for all the children that our players visited."
The community service trip showed the players the importance of being involved in activities off the court as well as making the day for some local Tri-Cities children at Niswonger.
"Sometimes as college kids you tend to think the world revolves around you," said Zaatini. "For our players to get out in the community and see children that don't have the same opportunties right now as they do, really humbles the spirit. This trip showed our student-athletes that having your health is truly a gift that you can't take for granted. What a great privilege it is for our guys to have the chance to play tennis, while getting a quality education at ETSU. This is a great community and our athletic department does an exceptional job of getting out and serving Johnson City as a whole. So many people forget the blessings that they have been given. Hopefully this trip showed our guys exactly how lucky they are each day."
The ETSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics takes pride in its community service activities and strives for 100 percent participation from its student-athletes, coaches and administrators throughout the year.
