JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 29, 2010) - Fresh off its best start in school history, the ETSU baseball team is set to face former SoCon rival Appalachian State Tuesday and ACC foe Virginia Tech Wednesday in two non-conference mid-week games.
The Buccaneers head to Boone, N.C. Tuesday for a 3 p.m. game against the Mountaineers at Smith Stadium. ETSU will then host the Hokies at Cardinal Park on Wednesday with the first pitch slated for 7 p.m.
ETSU (16-5, 5-1 A-Sun) is coming off of two big wins at Lipscomb this past weekend winning its fifth straight weekend series. The first place Bucs have been hitting lights out in non-conference games with a .349 average and 28 home runs. Junior Paul Hoilman (Johnson City, Tenn.) has been leading the way for the Buccaneers hitting a team-best .453 with 11 home runs and 35 RBI.
Appalachian State (14-6-1, 2-6-1 SoCon) is 0-4-1 in its last five contests after being swept by The Citadel on the road last weekend. The Mountaineers are led by senior Wes Hobson who is hitting .378 with eight doubles, four home runs and 20 RBI.
The Bucs are 50-68 all-time against the Mountaineers. ETSU dropped a 15-12 slugfest to Appalachian State on the road last season in a game that saw the Mountaineers rally for four run in the eighth for the win.
The Hokies (16-9, 4-5 ACC) have won three of their last four including a series win over Wake Forest in Blacksburg, Va. Virginia Tech as a team is hitting .331 with 59 doubles and 27 home runs. Junior Austin Wates leads the Hokies hitting .420 with 12 extra base hits and 19 RBI.
Virginia Tech leads the series with the Bucs 17-30, but ETSU has won five of the last seven meetings against the Hokies including three straight at home.
