Davies misses cut at The Open Championship

Friday, July 16, 2010

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland (July 16, 2010) - Former ETSU star Rhys Davies (Bridgend, Wales) fought tough conditions to fire a second round 3-over 75 at the Open Championship on Friday. Davies finished the first two rounds at 4-over par which did not qualify him for weekend play at the famed Old Course at St. Andrews.

Davies, who shot a first round 73 yesterday, got off to a shaky start to his second round as he was quickly five-over after just four holes. However, he would bounce back by recording birdies on holes 6, 7, and 9, to finish with a front nine 38. He would continue his solid play on the back nine by recording four straight pars followed by a birdie on the par-5, 14th hole. He would then record back-to-back bogeys on holes 15 and 16 to finish at plus-3 for the day.

Play was suspended due to darkness with many players still out on the course but currently the projected cut is at 1-over. However, there is still a good chance that all players at 2-over or better may make the cut after players finish their second rounds tomorrow morning.

South African Louis Oosthuizen currently has the lead as he sits at an impressive 12-under par (65-67132) for the championship.  Oosthuizen was fortunate to finish his second round before the wind and bad weather passed through the area.

First round leader Rory McIlroy followed his record round of 63 on Thursday with an 80 on Friday to drop him into a tie for 38th (1-under).

Play was suspended for nearly an hour due to high winds and rain during part of the morning session. Wind gusts were so high that balls on the greens and fairways were moving even when they were not in motion.
