JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Jan. 14, 2011) - After enduring heavy amounts of snowfall over the last week, the ETSU women's basketball team is saying good-bye to the powder and hello to some sunshine as the Lady Bucs gear up for a trip to the River City beginning Saturday afternoon at Jacksonville. Tip is set for 1 p.m. inside Veterans Memorial Arena.
As of Wednesday, Florida was the only state to not have snow on the ground, and the Lady Bucs are hoping to heat up after coming off a tight overtime victory over Stetson Monday night. Senior point guard Tara Davis (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) sank two free throws with three seconds remaining to send the game into overtime, and sophomore post Tosha Austin (Chattanooga, Tenn.) sealed things up with two freebies of her own, giving the Blue and Gold the 78-74 victory over the Hatters.
ETSU (7-8, 4-2) is led by the strong play of Davis, Destiny Mitchell (Bluffton, Ga.) and Natalie Pickwell (Kingsport, Tenn.) this season. Davis, who leads the team and ranks fourth in the conference in scoring, is averaging 15.3 points and 4.6 assists per contest. Meanwhile, Mitchell is coming off her second straight A-Sun Newcomer of the Week honor as she has tallied four straight double-doubles. Overall, the Bluffton, Ga. native has six double-doubles this season (Lady Bucs 4-2 in those contests) and is averaging 14.4 points and nine rebounds an outing. Wrapping things up is the sharpshooter Pickwell - who has scored at least 18 points in six of her last nine games - and is scoring 12.5 points per contest.
Jacksonville enters Saturday's contest with a record of 7-7, 2-3 after coming away with a split last weekend in Nashville. The Dolphins began the trip with a 74-69 loss at Lipscomb, but picked up a key 70-60 victory over Belmont on Monday.
The Dolphins are led by junior guard Crystal Bell's 10.9 points, while senior forward Lynsey Paschal is averaging 10.8 points and 7.9 rebounds per game.
As a team, Jacksonville is averaging 65.1 points, but allowing the opposition to score 68.6; however, the Dolphins are holding their opponents to 28 percent shooting from three-point territory.
Saturday marks the 12th meeting between the clubs and the Lady Bucs hold a commanding 11-1 all-time series lead. ETSU has won eight straight versus Jacksonville since falling 83-79 to the Dolphins inside Swisher Gym back on Feb. 15, 2007. Three of ETSU's 11 victories have come in the A-Sun Tournament - including back-to-back victories in the conference championship (2008 and 2009).
Fans unable to make the trip to Jacksonville can listen to all the action as Voice of the Bucs Jay Sandos will carry the play-by-play on WXSM-AM 640. Also, live video streaming will be offered on A-Sun.TV.
