MACON, Ga. (Jan. 28, 2011) - ETSU continues its excellence in the classroom as the Atlantic Sun Conference announced today that the Bucs have raced out to the lead in the A-Sun All-Academic race.
"I am extremely proud of our student-athletes for being committed to their academic success as well as performing at such a high level athletically," said Dave Mullins, ETSU Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. "Our coaches recruit young people who have a high chance of success and our academic staff has put together a great support system. This is an outstanding accomplishment for our department."
On Wednesday, the conference office announced that almost 69 percent of men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer, and volleyball players earned All-Academic status. Every Atlantic Sun institution had at least 54 percent of its students earn All-Academic honors.
ETSU holds a lead on Belmont, winner of seven All-Academic trophies, as more than 83 percent of the Buccaneers' fall student-athletes achieved All-Academic honors. The 83 percent earning All-Academic honors is an all-time high at ETSU. Lipscomb, last year's champion, and Mercer join ETSU and Belmont in having percentages higher than 70 percent.
In total, 652 student-athletes made the All-Academic teams, led by 207 from the conference's women's soccer programs. ETSU's champion men's soccer team boasted the top percentages in the sport. The men's and women's cross country team from Belmont each led the conference in those sports. The women's cross country squad posted the only 100 percent mark in the league. Lipscomb's women's soccer and Mercer's volleyball teams garnered the top percentages in their sport.
The Bucs had 27 student-athletes achieve a 4.0 during the semester, while all 14 athletic teams achieved a cumulative GPA of a B- or better. In addition, 73 percent of student-athletes earned Buccaneer Honor Roll (minimum 3.0 GPA), while 29 percent earned Dean's List (minimum 3.7 GPA).
To be named A-Sun All-Academic, a student-athlete must achieve a GPA of 3.0 or higher in the classroom during their semester of competition. The sports sponsored by conference members include cross-country, soccer, volleyball, basketball, tennis, golf, softball, baseball, indoor and outdoor track & field.
This year the conference introduced a pair of higher academic honors, the Commissioner's Scholar the President's Scholar. Atlantic Sun student-athletes who had completed their final year of eligibility, earned a cumulative GPA between 3.6 and 3.799 and completed a minimum of 48 credit hours at the institution earned the Commissioner's Scholar honor. Student-athletes who had completed their final year of eligibility, earned a cumulative GPA of 3.8 or above and completed a minimum of 48 credit hours at the institution earned the Commissioner's President's honor. In total, 11 A-Sun student-athletes received the Commissioner's Scholar and 15 earned the President's Scholar.
