SPARTANBURG, S.C. (April 12, 2011) - The ETSU men's golf team came from 11-shots behind to claim the team championship at the Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational on Tuesday afternoon at the Country Club of Spartanburg. The Bucs have now won the title at the event in back to back seasons.
The Bucs' first victory of 2011 was not easy as Richmond opened the tournament with a stellar 13-under score after two rounds. However, the Bucs rallied to compile a team score of 284 (-4) in Tuesday's final round to take the title. The 284 was the top team score of the day as the Bucs finished five-shots clear of Richmond in the 15-team event.
"Everybody played pretty solid as the wind picked up a lot today," said ETSU head coach Fred Warren, who won his 44th team title with the Bucs. "We made up a lot of ground on the last few holes, so I'm very proud of the nice round."
ETSU (-6) and Richmond (-1) were the only two teams to finish the event under-par. Campbell finished third at +6, while Charleston Southern (+12) and Wofford (+14) rounded out the top-five teams.
Freshman Lucas Armstrong (Church Hill, Tenn.) led the way for the Bucs after playing steady during all three rounds to finish tied for second at 4-under (71-70-71—212). This was Armstrong's top finish of the season.
"I put together three solid rounds even though I could have been a few shots lower, but all in all it was a pretty good week," said Armstrong.
Jacobo Pastor of Charleston Southern won the individual title at 6-under, just two shots clear of Armstrong and Nick Austin of Richmond.
ETSU sophomore Patrick Spraggs (Rochford, England) was the second Buccaneer to finish in the top-five as he tied for fifth at 2-under (72-69-73—214).
Senior Paul O'Kane (Castledawson, Northern Ireland) had the low ETSU round of the day with a 2-under 70. O'Kane finished in 13th position at even-par (73-73-70—216). Freshman Spencer Lawson (Raleigh, N.C.) had his lowest round of the event on Tuesday as he recorded a 1-under 71 to finish tied for 15th at +2 (73-74-71—218). Junior Devin Komline (Dorset, Vt.) rounded out the ETSU scoring with an even-par 72 on Tuesday to finish tied for 28th at +5 (76-73-72—221).
The Bucs will now prepare for the Atlantic Sun Championship which begins on April 18 at Chateau Elan in Braselton, Ga. The Bucs are the defending champions in the event.
"My play this week gives me a lot of confidence going into the conference tournament because I have had a past victory there (Chateau Elan) so I am really looking forward to it," added Armstrong.
