SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. (Sept. 19, 2011) – Welcomed by less-than-ideal weather conditions that allowed for just one round of play Monday afternoon at the Cardinal Club Golf Course, the ETSU women’s golf team opened its 2011-12 season and finished tied for eighth on the team leaderboard following first round play at the Wild Eggs Cardinal Cup.
The event, which is hosted by the University of Louisville, was originally scheduled for two rounds on Monday and a third round of action on Tuesday. However, the rainy conditions left the tournament rescheduled for one round on each of the two days. The Buccaneers finished the day at 311, 11 strokes back of second place East Carolina and 15 strokes back of first place North Carolina State.
"It was a wet day today with tough conditions, and we didn’t play very smart,” said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton. “But we hung in there and got our first competitive tournament round behind us with valuable lessons to take to the course tomorrow.”
The Bucs were led by sophomore Sian Evans (Gillingham, England), who fired a 4-over-par 76 and finished tied for 14th on the individual leaderboard. Evans is just four strokes back of three players who share the tournament lead at even-par 72.
Meanwhile, other ETSU results included a tie for 23rd by senior Mayte Vizcarrondo (Cadiz, Spain), while junior transfer Chloe Garner (Somerset West, South Africa) finished tied for 30th.
Third and final round at the Wild Eggs Cardinal Cup is scheduled for Tuesday, with live scoring and results available at Golfstat.com. For more on ETSU women’s golf throughout the season, including complete updates following every competitive round, visit ETSUBucs.com.
